New Brunswick's BioSciences Community
A recent inventory of New Brunswick's BioSciences Community has revealed:
- No less than 20 companies that would self-define as bioscience companies; and an equal and rapidly increasing number of companies from traditional sectors that are increasingly incorporating biosciences;
- 15 research institutions, and over 100 academics;
- A conservative estimate of employment at 1,879 highly qualified persons;
- A minimum of $110 million in economic activity from core bioscience companies, and as high as $226 million when factoring in the output of other industries (forestry, fisheries/aquaculture, agriculture, environmental industries);
- Over $23 million in project activity;
- Nearly 700 active projects in research institutions and universities;
- 210 products in the market place, and 102 in the pipeline;
- 122 patents;
- Substantial non-patent intellectual property consisting of fish broodstock, plant varieties, and potato and tree germplasm.
