Mount Allison Researcher Honoured with Paul Paré Medal
May 16, 2011Dr. Steve Westcott, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Mount Allison University was honoured with the Paul Paré medal at the recent convocation ceremonies in Sackville New Brunswick.
The honour recognizes contributions of outstanding quality that demonstrate a balanced approach to teaching, research/creative performance, scholarship, service, and outreach. "Steve's balanced approach to teaching and research makes him an ideal recipient of the Paul Paré Medal. Both his research and his undergraduate research groups have greatly contributed to the chemistry and biochemistry programs at Mount Allison and beyond, with many of his students continuing their studies at top graduate schools around the world. I congratulate him on a job well done," Mount Allison Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Research, Dr. Stephen McClatchie said.
New projects in Westcott's lab include a partnership with Mount Allison biologists Drs. Suzie Currie and Felix Baerlocher (both previous Paul Paré Medal recipients) and New Brunswick's Cooke Aquaculture.
Building on Westcott's work with the element boron, the team is working to produce an environmentally-friendly anti-parasite compound to help control sea lice on Atlantic salmon.
