New Brunswick fermentation technology at the core of a new discovery on the impact of wild blueberries on diabetes
September 2, 2009: Moncton, NB - A recent press release from the Université de Montréal alludes to the impacts of biotransformed wild blueberry juice on obesity and diabetes. The news revolved around a recent study published in the International Journal of Obesity, which demonstrates how the juice of the wild blueberry fermented with a novel bacteria present on the skin of the fruit holds great promise as an anti-obesity and anti-diabetic agent. Within a day the news flew across news services, and the lead author's inbox was swamped with information requests arriving from all over the world.

Cluster of investments bring focus and millions to cancer research in New Brunswick
June 5, 2009: Moncton, NB - There are a lot more than daffodils and tulips emerging on the grounds of the Moncton-based Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI) and its partners this spring. Wednesday's announcements of two university research chairs established at UNB and Université de Moncton, in collaboration with the ACRI, is but one of a cluster of investments that has been announced this spring.

Ocean Spray breaks ground on large project in New Brunswick
June 4, 2009: Rogersville, NB (CNB) - Ocean Spray, the world's largest cranberry handler, began construction today on a cranberry farm near Lac Després that has the potential to become a regional growing hub. The 3,400 hectare farm is being established on Crown Land, and the company is expected to invest up to $90 million to develop the farm. The Ocean Spray operation involves transforming 1,900 acres of Crown Land into prime, cranberry-producing bog. The development has the potential to become the largest cranberry farm on the continent, creating more than 100 full-time jobs.

June 2, 2009: St. Andrews, NB - Dr. Thierry Chopin, from the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, and Dr. Shawn Robinson, from Fisheries and Oceans Canada St. Andrews Biological Station, are the recipients of the 2009 Aquaculture Association of Canada Research Award of Excellence for taking the concept of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) from the laboratory to the realm of commercial production.

April 30, 2009: Sackville, NB - April has been a banner month for Sackville-based BioProspecting NB Inc. Founded in 2005, the company is an early stage drug discovery company that focuses on novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of cancer and chronic pain. The drug candidates are derived from soricidin, a compound isolated from the venom of the shrew, a small mammal native to Eastern Canada. The company has evolved rapidly since the founder, Jack Stewart, a biochemistry professor at Mount Allison University, started trapping the tiny rodents in his yard in 2001.

Research on Bisphenol A in fruit flies earns Grade 11 Fredericton student top prize in the 2009 Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge (SABC) for New Brunswick
April 23, 2009: Fredericton, NB - Research by Yoojin Kim, a 17-year-old Fredericton High School student, examined the effects of Bisphenol A on fruit flies, earning her first place prize in the 2009 Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge (SABC) for New Brunswick. Bisphenol A, an additive found in plastics, was in the news last year when many manufacturers stopped using it in the production of water and baby bottles. Kim's project studied the effects of the chemical on fruit fly mortality and reproduction. Due to similarities of the genetic codes in fruit flies and humans this research may lead to a toxicity screen for humans.

Multi-million dollar investment by federal government in new value-added uses for potato under BioPotato Network
February 27, 2009: Fredericton, NB - Earlier this month, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) announced the funding of the BioPotato Network, a network of researchers seeking to develop the science behind new value chains for potato. The multi-million dollar investment is part of a program launched in 2007, called the Agricultural Bioproducts Innovation Program (ABIP www.agr.gc.ca/abip). Bioproducts are products made from renewable biological resources. ABIP was designed to promote research, development, technology transfer and the commercialization of agricultural bioproducts in Canada, and the funding has been accorded through a competitive process.

Moncton's Atlantic Cancer Research Institute celebrates 10 years of success
January 27, 2009: Moncton, NB - A large group filled the atrium of the Moncton City Hall today in honour of the 10 year anniversary of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute. The Institute is celebrating its 10th anniversary under the theme of One Life at a Time.
